Job Description

Job Summary:

The Part-time Security Guard will provide support to the DSHA community with specific responsibilities for the safety and welfare of students, staff and visitors while on school grounds; monitoring personnel and/or visitors; communicating information in response to inquiries; and enforcing the school rules and regulations pertaining to student behavior and drug prevention. 

Schedule:

School year only; typically scheduled two to three days per week Monday-Friday, 4:30-8:30pm (2 nd shift); ability to meet a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends and provide additional coverage up to 20 hours in a week, as needed.

Responsibilities:

  1. Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation.
  2. Monitors student behavior at student events for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and secure facility.
  3. Participates in in-service training, workshops, etc. as required.
  4. Makes routine and scheduled foot and vehicle patrols of the building, grounds, and parking areas, maintaining a high degree of visibility at all times.
  5. Prepares written materials (e.g. security log, incident reports, referrals, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  6. Provides traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lots.
  7. Refers incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate personnel and/or city police for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
  8. Responds to a variety of situations (i.e. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
  9. Completes other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

Education and/or Experience:

High School diploma or equivalent. Two years’ experience working with youth and adults in an organized setting with School Safety, law enforcement, or security work experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to adhere to safety and security practices.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment including software.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly.
  • Ability to analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Knowledge of health standards and hazards.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Ability to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups.
  • Ability to adapt to changing work priorities, and top work with frequent and sustained interruptions.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse groups.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and insurability based on driving record are required.

  P hysical Demands: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; talk or hear; and use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects or controls. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders.

The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:  

The work takes place in primarily an office/school environment; however, there is regular exposure to outside elements with moderate noise when completing foot patrols. Ability to meet a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends.
